Region: Eastern Europe
Deployment: Operation Joint Endeavor
In 1995, 20,000 U.S. Service members began supporting a NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Bosnia to implement and monitor the military aspects of a peace agreement signed by inter-ethnic warring parties. In December 1996, this international peacekeeping force was succeeded by a smaller, NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR), including the Army's 1st Infantry Division, whose mission was to deter renewed hostilities. In December 2004 SFOR transitioned responsibilities to the European Union's forces.
