Demographic Trend Tables
Use
Use the Demographic Trend tables to examine changes in the racial/ethnic
or age distribution in the population over time. These tables include all
years that a contributor has participated in PedNSS or PNSS, listed from
the most recent year to the first year of participation.
Information on trends of demographic indicators can be helpful to:
- Assess changes in overall prevalence of health indicators in a
population.
- Determine if you need to target outreach efforts and nutrition
intervention programs to specific populations.
PedNSS Demographic Trend tables include:
- Table 10, Summary of Trends in Racial and Ethnic Distribution
- Table 11, Summary of Trends in Age Distribution
PNSS Demographic Trend tables include:
- Table 14, Summary of Trends in Racial and Ethnic Distribution
- Table 15, Summary of Trends in Age Distribution
These tables can be used to answer questions such as:
- Are demographic characteristics consistent over time.
- Are there specific populations for which we need to target our
outreach and nutrition intervention programs?

Note that for a 10-year period from 1993 to 2002 the
percent of Black, Not Hispanic children in this state decreased
from 41.7% to 26.8% and the percent of Hispanic children
increased from 23.2% to 33.3%. The percentages of other racial/ethnic
groups remained relatively the same during the 10-year period.
Because Hispanic children have the highest prevalence of
overweight (indicated in PedNSS Table 8C Growth and Anemia Indicators
by Race/Ethnicity and Age), the increase in the distribution of this
population could affect the overall prevalence of overweight. |
