Committee Explores Ways to
Secure Cyberspace
During the 111th Congress, the House Committee on Science and Technology will examine cyberspace to determine the best ways to improve cyber security. On May 28, the Committee received the Administration’s 60-day Cyber Security Policy Review Report and scheduled a series of hearings to determine the current methods used to secure cyberspace. In an effort to improve cyber security, the Committee has reviewed cyber security R&D, the agency response to cyber security policy review, and will discuss assessing cyber security activities at NIST and DHS.
“A more secure cyberspace equals a more secure nation. The path forward must focus not only on near-term solutions to current cyber attacks, but also on leap-ahead technologies and innovative research that will fundamentally change the future state of play,” stated Chairman Bart Gordon. “The President has made cyber security a priority and the Committee is looking forward to working with the Administration on this crucial issue.”

Fostering Innovation to Meet our Energy and Economic Needs
The major problems facing our country—a foundering economy, a changing climate, a growing need for clean energy we produce at home—will be solved by science, technology, and innovation. We can take a major step towards fostering the innovation we need by establishing the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy or ARPA-E.
ARPA-E will apply the DARPA research model to energy technology development. DARPA at the Department of Defense created a culture of innovation and lead to breakthroughs like GPS, stealth technology, body armor, and the Internet.
