Description of the PMC Service
Area
The East Texas Plant
Materials Center in Nocogdoches, Texas has a service
area of 42 million acres that include eastern Texas and northwestern areas of
Louisiana. Soils range from deep, coarse-textured sands to heavy clay inundated
bottomlands. Elevation varies from 50 to approximately 700 feet above sea level,
increasing from south to northwest.
The average annual precipitation of the area served by the PMC ranges
from 32
inches to more than 56 inches, increasing from northwest to southeast. Seasonal
rainfall patterns are established. Normally, rainfall, perennial streams, and
ground water provide an abundance of available water; however, short droughts
are common. Humidity and temperatures are usually high during the growing
season. The average growing season ranges from 228 days to 260 days from north
to south.
Principle conservation problems in this gently-rolling to hilly-forested and
prairies area include the need for plant materials and technology to provide
soil protection, enhance production, and improve water quality on degraded
pasture, rangeland, and cut-over timberland, surface-mined areas, frequently
inundated bottoms, streambanks, and saline and high water table soils.
