There are a ton of free images available online - one good place to start is Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_image_resources

My personal favorite is the Library of Congress, but you have to carefully read any and all copyright info. http://www.loc.gov/library/libarch-digital.html They also have a pilot with Flickr (which I think has been on this listserv): http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/flickr_pilot.html

The US Census has free photos: http://www.census.gov/pubinfo/www/broadcast/photos/

Several government sites have lists of free photo resources: http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Graphics.shtml is a good place to start.

There people are not government, but have a nice list also: http://www.dotgovwatch.com/?/archives/8-The-Best-Copyright-Free-Photo-Libraries.html or http://www.unclesamsphotos.com/

Please note that not all "government" images are actually copyright free. You need to read the fine print.

There's a good site for images of senior citizens, but I can't lay my hands on it right this second.
