Hi, all-

Some comments re access: I encourage people interested in this topic (broadly defined as digital divide or IT literacy and health) to consider joining the Digital Divide network http://www.digitaldivide.net/comm/ . Siobhan Champ-Blackwell just posted comments on it today about what a HUGE topic The Digital Divide and Human Health is. She she sees it from two sides: the health care providers who serve low income and underserved populations are themselves experiencing barriers to information, and the people they serve have barriers. Then Siobhan (who has a terrific blog at http://nnlm.gov/mcr/bhic/ ) mentions how many public & medical libraries are stepping in with service; but people still need to find out about services. This is a big issue: how people information seek, and what information they trust are separate-yet part- of the access issue. (see also Durrance and Pettigrew, 2001 <http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue6_4/durrance/index.html> ; Abrahamson & Fisher, 2007 <http://informationr.net/ir/12-4/colis/colis15.html> ) Dervin's 2001 <http://communication.sbs.ohio-state.edu/sense-making/artdirect/artdervin01nlm.pdf> background paper also summarizes some earlier empirical work re: everyday health information seeking and use.

The NCI HINTS <http://hints.cancer.gov/> (Health Information National Trends Survey) & Hints Briefs <http://hints.cancer.gov/docs/HINTS_Brief_10_061708.pdf> produces new data re: health information seeking & trust . One question is "How much would you trust the information about cancer from] the Internet?" http://hints.cancer.gov/questions/qDisplay.jsp?specCase=0&qID=858
See also OCLC's 2007 Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World <http://www.oclc.org/reports/pdfs/sharing.pdf> for this issue.

Anyway, following are some more links for those wanting documents on the Web just re: access to Internet, especially for low literacy individuals.
