Civil Rights History Project Act of 2009

On May 12, 2009, Congressman Bishop visited the Oval Office and watched as President Barack Obama signed the Civil Rights History Project Act of 2009 bill into law. Primary Care of Southwest Georgia

Congressman Bishop recently spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of a new wing at Primary Care of Southwest Georgia. The health center, funded in part through a federal Community Health Centers initiative, now houses three doctors and a nurse practicioner. |

Adrienne Gentry, a rising senior at the University of Georgia, Tony Mitchell, a rising senior at McKendree University, and Shanelle Wells, who will be a Second Year Law Student at North Carolina Central University, all did a fantastic job working in the office. |

2008 Congressional Art Competition Celebration

Jordan High School rising senior Brandon Mooney, winner of the Congressional Art Competition for Georgia’s Second Congressional District, this week traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the grand opening celebration of the 27th Annual Congressional Art Competition. As a part of the celebration, Mooney’s artwork, a scratchboard etching titled, “Snowy Sundrops,” was hung in the U.S. Capitol building’s Cannon tunnel, where it will remain until next June. |

Scholars Academy Visits Congressman Bishop

Twenty-eight eighth grade students from the Thomasville City Schools' Scholars Academy Beta Club recently visited Washington, D.C. and met with Congressman Sanford Bishop in his Capitol Hill office. During their meeting, the students and Congressman Bishop talked about a “typical day” on Capitol Hill, legislation under consideration on the floor that day, ways to reduce the national debt, and the Congressman's legislative priorities for Southwest Georgia.
The Scholars Academy students later walked over to the steps of the U.S. Capitol where Congressman Bishop joined the group for a photo on the East Steps. |

National Young Leaders' Conference

The National Young Leaders' Conference (NYLC) is designed to instruct and enrich promising students in a hands-on, experiential atmosphere while preparing them for a lifetime of leadership. The program also offers students the opportunity to discuss current events and issues with top policy makers in Washington, D.C. In early April, four Southwest Georgia high school students - Sean Chartier (Lowndes HS), Kelsey Durham (Deerfield), Trevor Hohorst (Lee County), and Sarah Pilcher (Deerfield)- stopped by Congressman Bishop's Washington, D.C. office to tell him about their participation in the NYLC.

2008 Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition allows high school students from all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories to showcase their artistic ability. The winning exhibit from each Congressional District is displayed in an eleven-month exhibit in a tunnel that leads to the U.S. Capitol building. This year's honorees were Brandon Mooney (Jordan High School), 1st place; Katelyn Reed (Brookwood High School), 2nd place; Davis Flowers (Brookwood High School), 3rd place; Karen Swann (Brookwood High School), honorable mention. |

Black History Observance Breakfast

Congressman Sanford Bishop along with Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC) were in Columbus to attend the 22nd Annual Black History Observance Breakfast at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center. Congressman Bishop introduced Congressman Clyburn, the event’s keynote speaker. Congressman Clyburn, who is the Majority Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, is the first South Carolinian and the second African-American to serve in the post.
Each President’s Day since 1986, the organizing committee of the Annual Black History Breakfast, in partnership with the local Congressional delegation, invites local students, interested citizens, community leaders, and business leaders to observe Black History Month by coming together and listening to a notable speaker. In recent years, speakers have included Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.

Congressional Record for State Champion Tigers

On December 15th, 2007, The George Washington Carver Tiger football team of Columbus defeated another great football team from the Second Congressional District, the Cairo Syrupmakers, by a score of 16-13. An epic battle between two talented, well coached teams, the state championshiop game capped an undefeated, 15-0 year for the Tigers and delivered the school’s first state football title in history and the first state title in any sport since 1971.
Recently, Congressman Bishop presented the Tigers and Coach Dell McGee with a framed copy of a Congressional Record statement congratulating them on their achievement. |

From August 12-14, 2007, Congressman Bishop and a group of lawmakers visited the Gulf Coast areas ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita just two years ago. The three-day trip focused on the progress made and outstanding needs in the areas of education, housing, health care and infrastructure. |

Camp Sunshine

Camp Sunshine is a retreat in Casco, Maine for children with life threatening illnesses. The camp has the distinction of being the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. On May 3, a group of Camp Sunshine Alumni from Georgia visited the U.S. Capitol. Among the group was Prince McBride, a 2nd District native and student at Kendrick High School in Columbus. |

On April 10, the Partnership for Perscription Assistance's "Help is Here Express" visited Albany's Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The goal of the "Help is Here Express" is to connect unisured Americans with a database of government and corporately- sponsored programs that afford access to free or deeply discounted prescription drugs. |

Congressman Sanford Bishop toured the operations of Dimensions International (DI) in support of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Brigade. DI is currently assisting the 3rd Brigade as it reconstitutes and repairs equipment in anticipation of redeployment to Iraq. Congressman Bishop was accompanied by four-star General (R) Johnnie Wilson, the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer, as well as Dr. Robert Wright, Chairman Emeritus and Senior Advisor of DI.

Alabama Pilgrimage

In March, Congressman Bishop participated in the The Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama, an event where members of Congress and their guests gather across racial, party, and religious lines for a unique experiential journey to historic sites in Alabama associated with the Civil Rights Movement. A three-day event, the Pilgrimage dramatizes the powerful role that spirituality and courage played in shaping our nation's history.
