Privacy Committee Documents

The Privacy Committee is the principal interagency forum to improve agency practices for the protection of privacy. The Privacy Committee serves as the interagency coordination group for Senior Agency Officials for Privacy (SAOP) and Chief Privacy Officers (CPO) in the federal government that provides a consensus-based forum for the development of privacy policy and protections throughout the federal government by promoting adherence to the letter and spirit of laws and best practices advancing privacy.

Subcommittees

The Best Practices Subcommittee will serve as a forum for development and promotion of best practices for federal privacy programs and policies. It will identify successful privacy practices and develop materials to facilitate information sharing about best practices across the federal privacy community. It will encourage analysis and evaluation of existing privacy practices, and make recommendations to the Privacy Committee on ways to improve privacy programs' implementation of current laws, regulations, and policies.

The Development and Education Subcommittee will serve as a forum for educating federal employees in the understanding, improvement, and application of privacy laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. It will explore ways to gather education resources and promote their dissemination throughout the government. The subcommittee will create a privacy clearinghouse for awareness, training, and educational materials as well as maintaining a list of recommended speakers to address privacy issues and concerns.

The mission of the International Privacy Subcommitteeis to serve as an inter-agency forum for agencies that have an interest in the U.S. government privacy framework and how it affects the U.S. government interactions internationally. The subcommittee will focus on understanding international data privacy standards and new developments; assisting in the coordination of requests by foreign governments for information on the federal government privacy framework; and supporting the existing processes established by law to coordinate a consistent message on privacy from U.S. government agencies.

The Web 2.0 Subcommittee will offer a forum for discussion and recommendations on how best to promote President Obama's "Open Government and Transparency" initiative while protecting privacy. Similar to the issues federal agencies first faced when creating federal websites, agencies must now develop policies and processes that ensure that the use of social media, which is designed to increase public participation in government, is consistent with privacy law and regulations and does not
