Spring flooding, tornadoes, and other weather-related disasters have caused significant damage around North Dakota this year. President Obama has signed a major disaster declaration to help deliver federal resources to the state, and to make federal assistance available to North Dakotans who have suffered property damage from flooding.

Individuals and businesses can apply for federal assistance through FEMA at (800) 621-3362, or online at www.fema.gov.

Senator Dorgan has prepared a booklet of information to help homeowners, renters and businesses apply for federal assistance in the flood recovery effort. To download a PDF of the booklet, click here.

FEMA and North Dakota Legal Services are offering free legal services to those affected by severe storms and flooding this year. This includes assistance with insurance claims, home repair contracts, landlord-tenant problems, mortgage-foreclosure problems, consumer protection matters, drafting powers of attorney, and replacement of lost documents, To receive help, call 1-800-634-5263 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Red Cross has established a hotline for flood victims in North Dakota and Minnesota. It is 1-866-438-4636. Others who wish to donate can still call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS.

People who have questions about the cleanup of a flood-damaged home can call the North Dakota Department of Health at 701.328.5188 or their local public health unit. Fact sheets with flood-related information can be found on the department's website at www.ndhealth.gov/flood.

Flood fight resources are also available from the NDSU Extension Service and the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services.

Federal and state emergency officials have opened Disaster Recovery Offices across the state to help area residents who have been affected by flooding. Disaster assistance specialists are available at these offices to speak to North Dakotans who are looking for information or help filling out loan applications and other documents.
