 Major Actions Taken to Date:
  • Application and guidance materials were drafted for final review for Phase I distribution of Title I and IDEA grant monies and State Fiscal Stabilization Fund application release by the end of March.
  • The Secretary of Education discussed Recovery Act education objectives with 35 City Superintendents at a meeting of the Council of the Great City Schools on March 16 and the National Science Teachers Association Conference in New Orleans on March 20.
  • The March edition of the Department's monthly television broadcast addressed the Recovery Act with a program entitled American Recovery and Reinvestment Act: Keeping Teachers Teaching and Students Learning on March 17.
  • Department of Education Senior Leadership discussed implementation of Recovery Act education components at a meeting of City/Local Recovery Czars on March 19.
  • A preliminary Risk Management Assessment was completed, along with a draft Technical Assistance plan to help States optimize financial reporting and control aspects of the Recovery Act.
  • Civil Rights obligations relative to the Recovery Act, including contact information, were posted to the Education Department Recovery Act web page.
 Major Planned Actions:
  • $11.4 billion in Recovery Act funding for Title I, IDEA Parts B and C, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Independent Living grants will be made available on March 26.
  • Congressional notification of Title I and IDEA allocations and final guidance and award documentation materials will be completed.
  • Fact Sheets and FAQs for all Phase I programs - Title I, IDEA Parts B and C, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Independent Living -- will be posted on ED.gov by March 26.
  • Conference calls with State Directors of Special Education and a presentation to a gathering of disabilities community professional and advocacy associations are scheduled for March 27 to review details of Recovery Act IDEA funding.
  • The Secretary of Education will continue to communicate Recovery Act education objectives, with remarks to the American Student Association of Community Colleges March 23 and the National Urban League March 26.
