Professional Development Award
Call for Applications (CFA)
The NN/LM Greater Midwest Region is pleased to announce the availability of a professional development award for individuals who work in GMR libraries that are full network members. Two (2) awards for up to $1,500 will be available during the 2009/2010 (May 2009-April 2010) contract year.

Purpose
The award is intended to enable individuals to expand their professional knowledge and experience to better manage their libraries and to provide improved health information access to health care professionals and consumers.
Requirements
- Applicants must be employed at least 50% time in a Network health sciences library that is a Primary Access Library. This award is not available to individuals who work in Resource Libraries.
- Applicants must be from a library that is a Full member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region
- Applicants must demonstrate how the professional development activity proposed is linked to a specific goal for the library.
- Applicants may receive this award only once during the 2006-2011 contract period.
- Developing a Web page for the library
- Setting up an intranet for the library and its parent institution
- Developing a computer-assisted instructional package or other type of educational package to help end-users gain better access to health information resources
- Developing a consumer-health service in the library
- Learning project management skills
- Selecting, managing and licensing electronic journals
- Space planning
- Developing user education programs or redesigning library services
- Attending a specific continuing education course or workshop
- Attending a conference, e.g. Computers in Libraries or EDUCAUSE
- Visiting other libraries or related institutions
- Personal memberships in organizations
- Building library collections
- Attending the Medical Library Association annual meeting or the regional MLA chapter meetings. However, funding may support attendance at workshops, institutes, and other special meetings held in conjunction with the MLA or chapter meetings.
Period of Performance
The period of performance for the award should begin at the time of approval of the award and end approximately one month after the completion of the activity/event funded by the award.
Technical Submission Requirements
The respondent should complete the
Professional Development Award Application online. Attachments, such as program descriptions and letters of
support, may be sent by fax to 312-996-2226 or attached in an electronic format to an email sent to
. Please make the name of your project the title of the email.
You will receive immediate electronic acknowledgement that your application was received by the GMR.
Cost Application Instructions
Total cost must not exceed $1,500.
Funding will be processed on a cost reimbursement basis. This award is not a grant or subcontract. Line item invoices must be submitted for reimbursement of expenditures. Reimbursement takes an average of four weeks.
The funds may be used to support:
- Registration fees
- Travel expenses
- Supplies or educational materials related to the activity/event.
Funding is not available for equipment, personnel or indirect costs.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be scored against the following criteria:- Applicant meets the qualifications outlined in the Requirements section
- Appropriateness of class to areas of health science librarianship and health information access
- Applicant demonstrates how the professional development activity is linked to a specific goal of the library
- Likelihood that the selected professional development activity will achieve the desired outcome
Reporting Requirements
Awardees will be expected to submit a written report to GMR on how their goals were met and provide documentation for their expenses 30 days after the activity takes place. Details regarding the proper submission of these items will be provided in the acceptance letter. The individual also is encouraged to submit an article that describes the project to The Cornflower, the GMR blog.

Publications Resulting from NN/LM Funded Projects
As of April 7, 2008, final peer-reviewed manuscripts arising from NIH funds must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. The NIH Public Access Policy (http://publicaccess.nih.gov/policy.htm 
) ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH funded research. It requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/ ) upon acceptance for publication.
To help advance science and improve human health, the Policy (http://publicaccess.nih.gov/FAQ.htm ) requires that these papers are accessible to the public on PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication. The NIH Public Access site should be consulted for additional information: (http://publicaccess.nih.gov/policy.htm ).
508 Compliance
If a website is developed under this award, the website must adhere to Section 508 compliance.
