EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIESUniformed Division OfficerSecret Service Uniformed Division officers provide protection for the White House Complex, the Vice President's residence, the main Treasury Building and Annex, and foreign diplomatic missions and embassies in the Washington, D.C., area. Additionally, Uniformed Division officers travel in support of presidential, vice presidential, and foreign head of state government missions. Uniformed Division officers are also responsible for the enforcement of mandated protective responsibilities as described under Title 3, United States Code, Section 202. Note: Lasik, ALK, RK and PRK are acceptable corrective eye surgeries for Uniformed Division officer applicants. Applicants will be considered eligible for the Uniformed Division officer position provided specific visual tests are passed three months after Lasik surgery and one year after all other surgeries. In addition, you will be required to submit a document from an optometrist at the time of the application, stating your visual acuity. To qualify at the entry level you must posses a high school diploma or the equivalent. Selective ServiceAs a condition of employment, male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under Selective Service law. Physical Fitness EvaluationApplicants must pass a medical examination by an authorized government physician and includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities. In addition, applicants must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties. Police Officer Selection Test (POST)Applicants must pass the Police Officer Selection Test. InterviewsApplicants must pass in-depth interviews. Top Secret ClearanceApplicants must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. Applicants must pass a pre-employment polygraph examination, drug screening, and extensive background investigation. AppointmentInitial appointment to the Uniformed Division officer position is normally made in the excepted service. Positions are only available in Washington, D.C. Reasonable moving expenses are paid for out-of-area hires. Pay and Work ScheduleUniformed Division officers are generally hired at the LE-1 grade levels with a starting 2009 starting salary of $50,787. Newly appointed officers normally work a 40-hour workweek on a set schedule (e.g., 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m.-11:00 p.m., or 10:30 p.m.-7:00 a.m. shifts). Workdays and shifts will vary depending on assignment and manpower requirements. Overtime is compensated at the rate of time and one-half, or through compensatory time off. TrainingNewly appointed Uniformed Division officers must successfully complete the 12-week Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's (FLETC) training program in Glynco, Georgia, and 13 weeks of specialized instruction at the James J. Rowley Training Center in outside of Washington, D.C. Failure to pass either training program on the first attempt will result in separation from the United States Secret Service. Additional on-the-job training and advanced in-service training programs complement classroom studies. Firearm ProficiencyUniformed Division officers, upon completion of training, are required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearms proficiency. TravelUniformed Division officers may experience frequent travel. Conditions of EmploymentOfficers will be required to work long hours in undesirable conditions on short notice and may be required to travel away from home for assignments of varying duration. The Uniformed Division officer position is designated as a key position in accordance with Department of Defense Directive 1200.7.
