State Profile

On the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, Delaware is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, as well as by the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Delaware ranks 49th in the nation with a total area of 1,982 square miles. The state capital is in Dover. According to the 2000 Census, Delaware has a population of 817,491 residents. Delaware residents are predominantly white (74.6%), with a significant black population (19.2%). Hispanics make up only 4.8% of the population, Asians make up the remaining 2.1% of the state's population.
