Graduate Fellowship Programs

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG)

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG)

The fellowship program is sponsored by the Army Research Office, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program This program is intended for U.S. citizens at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science and/or engineering programs. The fellowships are for three year tenures. The stipends begin at $30,500 for first year fellows, $31,000 for second year fellows, and $31,500 for third year fellows. Full tuition and fees and a health insurance allowance are included as part of the program. The application cycle is from September to January.

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP)

The NSF GRFP aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the U.S. and to reinforce its diversity. This fellowship offers a stipend of $30,000 a year for three years and a $10,500 cost of education allowance for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies. The National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

The National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

This program is intended for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are graduate students enrolled in research-based science or engineering programs. The duration of this summer fellowship is about 8 continuous weeks and research is performed at a host institution in Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, or Taiwan. A $5,000 summer stipend, cost of living expenses, and round-trip airfare are included in the award. The application cycle is from September to December.

Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)

Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)

This scholarship program provides students with a stipend allowance, full tuition, book allowance, room and board and other normal educational expenses. The purpose of the program is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students in science, mathematics and engineering studies. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to citizens of the United States, and students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible. There is an employment obligation to the DoD with this scholarship program.

Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP)

Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP)

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is now administering NREIP, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). NREIP is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs. The application is open from October through February.

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate scholarships and 5 two-year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students in Aeronautics and related fields. The program is open to U.S. Citizens who are enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university. Undergraduate students will receive up to $15,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. Graduate students will receive up to $35,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. All students will have the opportunity to attend a summer internship at a NASA Research Center with a summer stipend up to $10,000.

Summer Faculty Fellowship Programs

Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (AF SFFP)

Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (AF SFFP)

This program is intended for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have an earned doctorate in science or engineering and who hold full-time science or engineering faculty positions at U.S. colleges, community colleges and universities. The duration of this summer fellowship is from 8 to 12 continuous weeks and research is performed on-site. There is a competitive weekly stipend and relocation and daily expense allowances are available. The application cycle is from August to November.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) Summer Faculty Research and Sabbatical Leave Program

This program is intended for U.S. citizens who hold teaching or research appointments relating to science and/or engineering at U.S. academic institutions. A competitive stipend, relocation and travel allowances, and a pre-program site visit are offered. Application cycle is from September through January.

Naval Postdoctoral Programs

This program is open to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents and offers a competitive stipend as well as insurance, relocation, and travel allowances. This program offers one to three year postdoctoral fellowships designed to increase the involvement of scientists and engineers from academia and industry to scientific and technical areas of interest and relevance to the Navy. This program has a rolling admission.

High School Fellowship Programs

Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)

Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)

This program is intended for high school students who have completed at least Grade 9. SEAP is an eight week summer research opportunity at participating ONR laboratories. Applicants must be 16 years of age for most Laboratories, and U.S. citizens. A competitive stipend is available. The application cycle is from October to February.
