There are a few special places in our nation where people can experience the sweep of American history. The Presidio is one such place. Established by Spanish explorers in 1776, it is the birthplace of San Francisco. Developed by the U.S. Army over the course of a century of national expansion and growing power, it is being reborn as a premier national park site. The Presidio of San Francisco is a national jewel and a local treasure.
The Main Post is the heart of the Presidio and is its civic and cultural center. The Main Post’s historic buildings and parade grounds create a juxtaposition to the park’s forest, trails, and wild open spaces. Some of the Main Post’s important features have been lost or obscured over time, making it difficult for visitors to the post today to celebrate the layers of history.
The Presidio Trust is building on two decades of community planning to fulfill the Main Post’s promise as the heart of the park. The Trust seeks to bring back the Main Post’s character and welcome the public; to preserve and animate its historic buildings; and to create new ways for visitors to experience history and culture.
Three principles guide our work and will help secure the Main Post’s position among the ranks of great American places:
- Reveal and celebrate the Presidio’s history
- Create a welcoming place for the public
- Use 21st Century green practices in making and maintaining the park
We invite the public’s participation and comments in this planning process. Please view the documents and the Preferred Alternative at a glance, visit the Main Post Information Center, attend a public meeting, or submit a comment.
