Revitalizing the Thornburgh-West Letterman Area

** Environmental Assessment Available Fall 2008**

What is the Thornburgh Area?

A photo of two historic buildings along Thornburgh Road, with palm trees in the foreground. The Thornburgh area is one of the Presidio's hidden treasures - a small-scale historic industrial streetscape in view of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. It is located west of the Letterman Digital Arts Center, not far from the Gorgas Gate, in the Presidio’s Letterman district.

The historic area dates from the early 1900s. Its buildings originally housed support services for the old Letterman Hospital (today the Thoreau Center), and all are contributing features of the Presidio’s National Historic Landmark District.

Revitalizing Thornburgh

The Presidio Trust is now revitalizing this northeastern corner of the park. In fall 2006, the Trust released a Request for Expressions of Interest seeking qualified teams to lease and rehabilitate 12 historic buildings totaling 144,000 square feet. In January 2007, the Trust hosted a public workshop to discuss early ideas for the district and to gather community input.

As a result of this process, four teams were invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), which was released on March 30, 2007. Additionally, in April 2007, the Presidio Trust issued a Notice of Intent announcing the beginning of public scoping for the Thornburgh Buildings Environmental Assessment (EA), pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The Trust has entered into exclusive negotiations with one of the respondents (Equity Community Builders), which proposes to rehabilitate the historic buildings for green-related small businesses and organizations, a restaurant/café, and local serving retail. The proposal is known as the Presidio Center for a Green Economy.

Environmental Assessment – Fall 2008

The Trust is now completing the EA for the Presidio Center for a Green Economy and alternatives. The EA and draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) will be available for review at local libraries, the Trust headquarters at Building 34 on the Main Post, and on this website in the fall of 2008.
