Reporting agencies may specify the location of an offense within a hate crime incident as one of 25 location designations. Locations (based on Table 10) of the 7,624 hate crime incidents reported in 2007 were as follows:
- 30.5 percent of hate crime incidents happened in or near residences or homes.
- 18.9 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 11.3 percent took place in schools or colleges.
- 6.0 percent happened in parking lots or garages.
- 4.1 percent occurred in churches, synagogues, or temples.
- 2.2 percent took place in commercial office buildings.
- 2.0 percent transpired in bars or nightclubs.
- 11.5 percent happened in other or unknown locations.
- 13.7 percent occurred in the remaining specified location categories (e.g., air/bus/train terminal, convenience store, service/gas station) or in multiple locations.
Location by bias motivation
Racial bias
There were 3,870 hate crime incidents motivated by racial bias in 2007 according to law enforcement reports. Of these:
- 32.5 percent took place in or near residences or homes.
- 20.3 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 12.1 percent happened in schools or colleges.
- 6.0 percent took place in parking lots or garages.
- 9.4 percent occurred in other or unknown locations.
- 19.8 percent took place in the remaining specified location categories or in multiple locations.
Religious bias
Religious bias was the motivation for 1,400 reported hate crime incidents in 2007. Of these:
- 25.9 percent took place in or near residences or homes.
- 18.0 percent happened in churches, synagogues, or temples.
- 12.1 percent occurred in schools or colleges.
- 7.7 percent transpired on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 20.8 percent took place in other or unknown locations.
- 15.4 percent occurred in the remaining specified location categories or in multiple locations.
Sexual-orientation bias
In 2007, law enforcement agencies reported 1,265 hate crime incidents based on bias against a particular sexual orientation. Of these:
- 30.1 percent happened in or near residences or homes.
- 23.9 percent transpired on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 10.7 percent occurred at schools or colleges.
- 6.6 percent took place in parking lots or garages.
- 10.7 percent happened in other or unknown locations.
- 18.0 percent took place in the remaining specified location categories or in multiple locations.
Ethnicity/national origin bias
Law enforcement reported 1,007 hate crime incidents motivated by ethnicity/national origin bias in 2007. Of these:
- 29.5 percent happened in or near residences or homes.
- 22.7 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 8.6 percent took place in parking lots or garages.
- 8.0 percent transpired at schools or colleges.
- 7.0 percent occurred in other or unknown locations.
- 24.1 percent took place in the remaining specified location categories.
Disability bias
In 2007, 79 hate crime incidents were motivated by bias against individuals with a disability (either physical or mental). Of these:
- 38.0 percent transpired in or near residences or homes.
- 17.7 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
- 19.0 percent took place in other or unknown locations.
- 25.3 percent happened in the remaining specified location categories.
Multiple-bias incidents
Of the 3 multiple-bias hate crime incidents reported in 2007:
- 2 took place in or near residences or homes.
- 1 occurred on a highway, road, alley, or street.
