Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a year-round internship?

Students interested in a year-round internship should submit a cover letter, resume and unofficial transcript to DITSIP@fdic.gov. Students should specify whether they are applying for a STEP or SCEP internship.

Will I have to complete any other paperwork if I am considered for a position?

Yes.  Applicants that are contacted for an interview and/or candidates that receive an offer for a job will have to complete a hiring package to include an FDIC Application for Student Educational Employment Program, Applicant Certification Statement, Declaration for Federal Employment, in addition to other forms that may be required to secure a position with FDIC.

How do I know what kind of internship to apply for (STEP or SCEP)?

STEP internships do not need to be directly related to a student’s academic or career goals. In the STEP program, there is no possibility for conversion to a competitive appointment upon completion of the program.

SCEP internships are based on the possibility of a student’s conversion to a competitive appointment within the FDIC upon completion of the program. A student is only eligible for the SCEP program if the work relates directly to their education and career goals. SCEP internships require that the student complete 640 hours of work time before the completion of their degree/certificate, in order to be eligible for conversion to a competitive appointment.

Both programs allow for full-time and part-time work schedules. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited school in order to be eligible for either program.

How will I know if my application is being considered?

Because of the volume of resumes received, it will be impossible to contact all of the applicants individually.  All applications for internships will be considered active for up to one year from the date the application is received.  We will contact only those individuals who we deem as potential candidates for an open position.

When will I hear from you about an interview?

Qualified candidates will be notified via phone and/or email regarding interviews and/or selection.

When will you make offers to successful applicants?

Once a candidate has successfully completed the interview process and is deemed a fit for an opening, we first extend "tentative" offers by telephone with a follow-up letter or email which includes an application form used for the required background checks. Once a successful background check is completed and reveals no problems, we then send a formal offer letter with proposed grade and salary. This process can take up to one month.

How are offers made?

“Tentative” offers are made first by telephone by the DIT administrative staff and followed up with a letter or email. All final offers will be made by FDIC’s Human Resources Branch, which will confirm grade and salary, but only after a successful background investigation is completed.

Do you pay travel/room and board expenses?

The FDIC does not pay for travel or room and board expenses.
