FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program Student Instructions

The FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program offers courses in many areas of forensic science. Courses are designed for and open to U.S. law enforcement agencies, government crime laboratories and military personnel. International students must be employed by similar government agencies and consult with their respective FBI Legal Attaché office prior to applying.

Interested students should review the current Schedule and Course Description links to identify courses that best fit their skills, experience, interests and the needs of their organizations.

The application process includes the following:

Step 1) Complete the FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Application

Step 2) Complete the FBI Virtual Academy Registration/Enrollment
(This step is only required for students who wish to receive VA course credit.)

Step 1 - Complete a Laboratory Specialized Training Application

Once the student has completed the Training Application Form (pdf) included on the Laboratory Training web site, select the “E-mail Application” button on the bottom of the form to electronically submit it to the Laboratory Training Group. If the student would like to keep a copy of the application for your own records, you may do so by selecting the “Print Application” button before closing the application.

Note: The form requires the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader. If the Adobe tool is not loaded on your system, it is available as a free download from http://www.adobe.com/acrobat

If you experience any problems completing the Specialized Training Application, please contact the Laboratory Training Group by emailing: FBILabTraining@ic.fbi.gov. Applications are accepted throughout the year and selected students are notified approximately 30-45 days prior to the start of each course.

Step 2) Complete the FBI Virtual Academy Registration/Enrollment
(This step is only required for students who wish to receive VA course credit.)

The VA Registration system is used to maintain individual training histories, generate reports and provide enrollment updates. Students who wish to receive VA course credit should complete the registration process. All applicants and their respective organizations must establish a VA account prior to registering.

Access the Virtual Academy internet link or type the following URL: https://fbiva.fbiacademy.edu (For students employed by the FBI, a Virtual Academy link is available on the internal network/intranet)

Complete Agency Registration (only required if agency has not previously registered in VA) – Only employees of validated agencies will be able to register as users/students of the FBI Virtual Academy. If the student’s agency does not already have an FBI Virtual Academy account, the agency must first apply and be validated by the FBI Virtual Academy administrators. The Agency Application should be submitted by the agency’s training manager (or the person who will serve as the agency’s point of contact for all FBI training matters).

Your agency’s training manager can click on the Agency Registration on the VA login page to go to the on-line application. When your agency is validated, the agency training manager will receive an e-mail from the system.

Complete User Registration (only required if you have not previously registered in VA) – If you are not already a VA user, then you will need to complete User Registration within VA in order to enroll in a course. Once an agency is validated, then individuals within that agency may register for a VA account. Individual users within a validated agency may register themselves. The agency’s training manager must validate the user’s request for access to the system.

Please click on the User Registration on the VA login page to go to the on-line application. Follow the instructions provided on each new screen. The User Registration will be validated by the agency’s training manager. The length of this process will vary from hours to days depending on the availability of the agency’s training manager. Students will receive an e-mail from the system notifying them when their registration has been approved.

Complete Course Enrollment – Once you have access to VA (via User Registration), then log into the VA and select the link for the Course Catalog. Search for the course you wish to apply. Under the course description on the right side of the screen you will find the link to Request Enrollment for the corresponding section. Select the enrollment link and follow the instructions to apply for the course.

If you experience any problems registering for the Virtual Academy, please contact the Virtual Academy Support office by emailing: virtualacademy@fbiacademy.edu

Thank you for your interest in the FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program.
