Reporting agencies may specify the location of a hate crime incident as one of 25 location designations. Information regarding the location of hate crimes indicated that:

  • 30.0 percent of the 7,163 reported hate crime incidents occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 18.3 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 13.5 percent happened at schools or colleges.
  • 6.6 percent took place in parking lots or garages.
  • 4.3 percent occurred in churches, synagogues, or temples.
  • 0.2 percent occurred at multiple locations.
  • 17.3 percent took place in various other locations (e.g., restaurants or public buildings).
  • 9.8 percent took place in unspecified or unknown locations.

Location by Bias Motivation

Racial Bias

Of the 3,919 racially biased hate crime incidents:

  • 31.0 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 19.9 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 13.2 percent occurred at schools or colleges.
  • 6.7 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 19.8 percent occurred at various other or multiple locations.
  • 9.3 percent occurred in unspecified or unknown locations.

Religious Bias

Law enforcement agencies reported that 1,227 hate crime incidents were motivated by a bias against the victim’s religion. Of these:

  • 25.5 percent took place in or near homes or residences.
  • 18.2 percent occurred in churches, synagogues, or temples.
  • 17.0 percent happened at schools or colleges.
  • 7.6 percent occurred on highway, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 3.7 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 12.5 percent of incidents happened at various other or multiple locations.
  • 15.6 percent occurred in unspecified or unknown locations.

Sexual-Orientation Bias

Of the 1,017 hate crime incidents stemming from a sexual-orientation bias in 2005:

  • 32.3 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 25.0 percent happened on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 12.1 percent occurred at schools or colleges.
  • 6.8 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 16.5 percent occurred in various other or multiple locations.
  • 7.4 percent occurred in unspecified or unknown locations.

Ethnicity/National Origin Bias

There were 944 hate crime incidents in 2005 motivated by an anti-ethnicity/national origin bias. Of these:

  • 28.6 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 19.4 percent happened on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 12.0 percent occurred at schools or colleges.
  • 9.4 percent happened in parking lots or garages.
  • 24.2 percent occurred in various other or multiple locations.
  • 6.5 percent occurred in unspecified or unknown locations.

Disability Bias

Fifty-three incidents were prompted by an anti-disability bias. Of these:

  • 21 incidents occurred in or near homes or residences.
  • 6 occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 7 occurred in unspecified or unknown locations.
  • 19 incidents took place at various other locations.

Multiple-Bias Incidents

Three multiple-bias hate crime incidents occurred in 2005:

  • 2 happened in multiple locations.
  • 1 occurred at a school or college.
