Mission
The national objectives of general welfare, economic growth and stability, and the security of the United States require the development of transportation policies and programs that contribute to providing fast, safe, efficient, and convenient transportation at the lowest cost consistent with those and other national objectives, including the efficient use and conservation of the resources of the United States.
Role in Space-Based PNT
- Serves as the lead civilian agency within the U.S. Government on space-based PNT issues.
- Provides resources to the Department of Defense for new, civil-unique GPS capabilities.
- Operates the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) to support aviation safety and efficiency.
- Operates the terrestrial component of the Nationwide Differential GPS System (NDGPS) to support surface transportation safety and efficiency.
- Chairs the Civil GPS Service Interface Committee (CGSIC).
- Applies space-based PNT to a broad variety of governmental activities, including the development of intelligent transportation systems.
