What is P3P?

P3P is the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project. It was developed by the W3C, (World Wide Web Consortium) as a protocol for providing automated privacy information to web site visitors, giving them more control over their own personal information obtained by the web sites.

Using P3P, an organization posts on its Web site an XML-formatted (machine-readable) privacy policy describing its privacy practices, including the type of information collected, how the information is used, and who has access to the information.

As of August 31, 2005, all SAMHSA-funded web sites must include code for machine readable P3P compliancy (more about P3P).
