Entry-level Attorney Program

The Bureau of Competition is actively recruiting talented and dedicated third year law students, joint degree candidates, and judicial clerks with an exceptional level of commitment to protecting consumers by enforcing the nation’s antitrust laws.  Those selected are hired as law clerks and are converted to attorney positions upon attaining bar membership.  A background in business or economics is preferred.

The Bureau is seeking 8 full-time, entry-level attorneys to practice at the FTC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.  Although many of these positions are filled through offers made to law students from the Bureau’s Summer Program, the Bureau recruits a limited number of third year law students, joint degree candidates, and judicial clerks for the remaining positions.  The Bureau recruits applicants through on-campus interviewing, outreach events, and our application process.

All entry-level attorney positions for 2009 at our offices in Washington, D.C., have been filled at this time.  Please check USAJobs for other openings.

Compensation

Law clerks with a JD or equivalent are hired through advance commitment at a Grade 11, Step 7 salary scale.  Law clerks with an advanced degree or those completing a judicial clerkship are compensated at the Grade 12, Step 5 level.  Exact salary will be determined by an individual applicant’s qualifications.  If you are a non-US citizen, please see the Citizenship Requirements below for additional information

Start Dates

Law clerks are hired for a fourteen-month appointment pending bar admission, and generally begin work in October.  Law clerk title changes to Attorney upon bar admission (must be licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, Territory, the District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico).
