Disposal
EPA’s Disaster Debris Management and Disposal (DDMD) Decision Support Tool is designed to assist emergency responders and other individuals responsible for making disposal decisions. The tool provides access to technical information, regulations, and guidance to work through important disposal issues to assure safe and efficient removal, transport and disposal of waste materials.
Note: A flexible user account security mechanism allows sharing of disposal scenarios developed while using the tool so that subsequent users who have a similar situation can rapidly generate the information needed to make decisions, therefore users will be asked to create a user ID and password.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
Emergency management databases and tools are designed to help first responders address emergency situations, assist facilities in complying with emergency management regulations, and give the public an improved understanding of chemicals in their community.
Emergency Response Special Teams work together to prepare for and respond to emergency releases of hazardous substances. They play a critical role in helping the Agency accomplish its mission to protect human health and the environment during emergency incidents. EPA’s Emergency Response Special Teams are:
- Radiological Emergency Response Team (RERT)
- Environmental Response Team (ERT)
- National Decontamination Team (NDT)
- National Counter-terrorism Evidence Response Team (NCERT)
Homeland Security Research
The National Homeland Security Research Center includes:
- Homeland security research news
- Web-based tools
- Software tools
Natural Disasters and Weather Emergencies
People’s response to natural events can also harm either themselves or the environment. EPA's natural disaster and weather emergencies page provides information on preparing for and responding/recovering from various natural disasters.
RadNet
RadNet is a national network of monitoring stations that regularly collect air, precipitation, drinking water, and milk samples for analysis of radioactivity. The RadNet network, which has stations in each State, has been used to track environmental releases of radioactivity from nuclear weapons tests and nuclear accidents. Data generated from RadNet provide the information base for making decisions necessary to ensure the protection of public health. The system helps EPA determine whether additional sampling or other actions are needed in response to particular releases of radioactivity to the environment.
