UIC Primacy Programs
Alabama
The State of Alabama's UIC Program is implemented by the Alabama Oil and Gas Board,
Groundwater Protection Program which regulates Class 2 wells, and the Department
of Environmental Management
which regulates all other injection wells.
Alabama has several Class 3 wells, the only such wells found in Region 4.
Class 1 wells are prohibited by State regulation.
Florida
The Florida
Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulates all classes
of injection wells except Class 2 (which are regulated by EPA). Florida has
many Class 1 wells, one of which is a hazardous waste injection well. The
majority of Florida's Class 1 wells are municipal
wastewater disposal wells.
Georgia
The Watershed Protection Regulatory Support Program of Georgia's Environmental Protection
Division implements the UIC Program for all well classes. Currently, only
Class 5 wells are found within the State.
Mississippi
The UIC Program in the State of Mississippi is implemented
by the Mississippi Oil & Gas Board
which regulates Class 2 wells, and the
Management Support Branch
, Department of Environmental Quality which
regulates all other well classes. In addition to Class 2 injection wells,
Mississippi has Class 1 hazardous waste injection wells, Class 1 non-hazardous
injection wells, and Class 5 injection wells.
North Carolina
The North Carolina
Department of Environment and Natural Resources implements the UIC
Program for all well classes. However, since the disposal of any waste through
a well is banned by statute in the State, Class 1, 2, and 3 wells are prohibited.
Several types of Class 5 wells are also prohibited such as gaseous hydrocarbon
storage, nuclear waste disposal, and waste disposal wells.
South Carolina
The UIC Program in the State of South Carolina is implemented
by the Department
of Health and Environmental Control which regulates all classes of
injection wells. Class 1 wells are prohibited in the State. Currently, only
Class 5 wells are found within the State.
