From Paper to People: After IRB Approval of Research Studies - This brochure was developed by the  Department of Energy (DOE) Human Subjects Research Program,  and "demonstrates the continuing, collaborative role and the responsibility of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) in working with principal investigators, sponsors, study subjects, the community, and others to promote ethical research.  It also emphasizes the interactive and dynamic nature of the review process in contrast to the widely-held misperception that such a review is just a perfunctory response to regulatory requirements."  Copies of this brochure may be obtained by contacting Kim Laing at the Department of Energy.

The National Research Council of the National Academies recently published a report, Protecting Participants and Facilitating Social and Behavioral Sciences Research, which "examines three key issues related to human participant protection in social, behavioral, and economic sciences research: (1) obtaining informed, voluntary consent from prospective participants; (2) guaranteeing the confidentiality of information collected from participants, which is a particularly challenging problem in social science research; and (3) using appropriate review procedures for 'minimal-risk' research."  ORO brings this report to your attention for your interest without providing critique or stance on findings or recommendations.  This report is available to read online at no cost.
