Winter Weather Brings Road Closures in National Forest
The Forest Service has begun closing some roads in Los Padres National Forest for the duration of the winter season. Additional forest roads will be closed intermittently during wet weather. The purpose of the road closures is to prevent damage to the unpaved road surface during wet weather.

Fire Restrictions in Forest to be Lifted
Los Padres National Forest officials today announced that fire restrictions will be lifted in all areas of the Los Padres National Forest effective Saturday, December 23, due to cooler weather, rain, and improved fuel moisture. - December 19, 2006

Horse Creek Dam Removed in Los Padres National Forest; Endangered Species to Benefit
Through the joint efforts of several agencies and organizations, the defunct Horse Creek dam in the San Rafael Wilderness within Santa Barbara County, was demolished Wednesday (10-18-2006) by a blasting crew.

In honor of National Public Lands Day on September 30, the National Forest Adventure Pass will not be required for recreationists visiting areas of Los Padres National Forest where the pass is normally required.

Emergency Fire Closure Expanded in Los Padres National Forest;
Additional Fire Restrictions Imposed

Out of concern for public safety during the current wildfire emergency, the Forest Service has closed a large area of Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County, Kern County and Santa Barbara County. The Forest Service also has announced that campfires and charcoal barbecues are now prohibited in all areas of Los Padres National Forest except facilities managed by concessionaire.

Fire Closure Area is Reduced North of Frazier Park
Los Padres National Forest officials announced today that they have further reduced the size of an emergency fire closure north of the community of Frazier Park. The area has been off-limits to the public since the Scott Fire started on July 24. A smaller area of the forest will remain closed through April 2007, according to Mt. Pinos District Ranger Tom Kuekes.

The Forest Service announced today that they have further reduced the size of an emergency fire closure in the northern Santa Barbara County portion of Los Padres National Forest.

Forest Service Reduces Size of Emergency Fire Closures 8-3-2006
The Forest Service has reduced significantly the area of Los Padres National Forest closed to public entry due to recent fire emergencies. According to Forest Supervisor Gloria Brown, improved conditions have enabled her to lift the closure in the Perkins Fire area in eastern Santa Barbara County, and reduce the size of the closures surrounding the Scott and Ridge Fires in Kern County and the Bald Fire in northern Santa Barbara County.

In response to the increasing possibility of fire, Los Padres National Forest officials today announced that they are imposing additional fire restrictions throughout the forest beginning Saturday, July 22.

Los Padres National Forest Fire and Fireworks Restrictions
In response to recent fire activity, and with conditions becoming hotter and dryer in the forest, Los Padres National Forest officials today announced that fire restrictions will be in effect as of July 1. These restrictions will affect the use of campfires, stoves and smoking materials. The restrictions will remain in effect until the end of high fire season, with the arrival of significant rainfall; normally late fall.

The Santa Lucia Ranger District in partnership with Santa Barbara County Fire Department is proposing a multi-year hazardous fuels reduction project on 24,850 acres in the area east of the community of Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County.

Forest Service to Offer Guided Tours of Brazil Ranch
The US Forest Service in cooperation with the Big Sur Environmental Institute, will begin conducting guided tours and hikes of the 1,200 acre Brazil Ranch every Saturday, beginning April 1.

Ken Heffner, from the US Forest Service Intermountain Regional Office in Utah has been selected by Chief of the Forest Service, Dale Bosworth, to be the next Deputy Forest Supervisor of the Los Padres National Forest.

Safety Tips for Winter Recreation in Los Padres National Forest
With another winter storm expected to drop significant rainfall and snow to 1500 feet this weekend, visitors to Los Padres National Forest are reminded to use extreme caution when driving and recreating. Ice and mud, rock slides, washouts, flash floods, traffic jams and large crowds are just a few of the possible hazards.

Piedra Blanca Trailhead Closed for Construction; Rose Valley Road Paving Project to Cause Short Traffic Delays
The Forest Service announced today that the Piedra Blanca trailhead in the Rose Valley Recreation Area of Los Padres National Forest will be closed through February 17, to allow completion of several improvements to the site. In addition, once the trailhead construction is complete, contractors will begin paving sections of Rose Valley Road resulting in short traffic delays over a period of several days.

Forest Service to Host Smithsonian Exhibition
"Inspirations from the Forest," an exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and in partnership with the US Forest Service will travel throughout the country in 2006. The first stop on its tour will be the Santa Barbara Ranger District Office, of the Los Padres National Forest, located at 3505 Paradise Road.

East Camino Cielo Closed During Road Paving
A portion of East Camino Cielo will be closed for repaving. The closed segment of road will be from the intersection of Gibraltar Road and East Camino Cielo and running eastward to Romero Saddle. The closure date will be January 9th thru January 13th, 2006 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily.

Traffic Signal Placed on Paradise Road
Visitors to the Santa Ynez Recreation Area in Los Padres National Forest will encounter a new signal light on Paradise Road, approximately 5 miles east of Highway 154. January 25, 2006.

East Camino Cielo Closed During Road Paving

East Camino Cielo and Arroyo Burro Shooting Area Closed During Construction
East Camino Cielo Road will be closed between Painted Cave Road and Gibraltar Road (5N40) from December 27, 2005 through January 10, 2006, except for weekends and January 2.

Office Hours Change at Los Prietos Ranger Station
The US Forest Service's Los Prietos Ranger Station, located 3505 Paradise Road, has switched to its winter operating schedule and is now open weekdays only, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Forest Service to Conduct Prescribed Burn near Alamo Mountain
The Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn this winter/spring in the Alamo Mountain area of Los Padres National Forest. The project is located approximately 11 miles south of the community of Frazier Park and 11 miles west of Interstate 5.

Forest Service to Conduct Prescribed Burn near Colson Canyon Campground
The Los Padres National Forest, Santa Lucia Ranger District plans to prescribe burn 7,370 acres of standing chaparral vegetation starting on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 (weather permitting) in the vicinity of Buckhorn Ridge and Colson Canyon Campground.

Forest Service Proposes to Repair Popular Trail in San Rafael Wilderness; Public Ideas Welcome: Los Padres National Forest officials are proposing to rebuild a section of the popular “Lower Manzana Trail” at the western edge of the San Rafael Wilderness, according to Santa Lucia District Ranger Kathleen Phelps.

Public Invited to Learn About Proposed Forest Health Project on Figueroa Mountain : Los Padres National Forest officials are proposing a long term project to improve the health of the forest in the popular Figueroa Mountain area.

Forest Service to Begin Thinning Hazardous Fuels on Ojai Valley Ridges : The Forest Service hopes to begin work next week on a 3-month long "hazardous fuels modification" project designed to help protect the Lake Casitas watershed and the communities of Meiners Oaks, Oak View and Ojai.

Forest Service to Improve Upper Oso Campground and Trailhead : The Santa Barbara Ranger District will begin work on Tuesday, October 12th to improve the Upper Oso Campground and the Upper Oso Trailheads in the Santa Ynez Recreation Area. (Note: this construction project started late and also due to inclement weather is not completed.)

Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center Changes Hours : The Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center, located eight miles north of Ojai on Highway 33 in Los Padres National Forest, is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Adventure Pass No Longer Required on Monterey Ranger District : The Forest Service is changing its recreation fee program on the Los Padres, Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino National Forests by designating several areas where, beginning Memorial Day Weekend, the Adventure Pass will not be required.
