June Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Rose 7.2 Percent from June 2004

Monday, August 29, 2005 - Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico rose 7.2 percent in June 2005 compared to June 2004 to a total of $59.4 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (Table 1). 

BTS, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), reported that total surface transportation trade rose 2.7 percent in June from May (Table 2).  Trucks carried 66 percent of imports and 80 percent of Exports by value (Table 3).  Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline.  About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.

Total surface transportation trade value in June was up 28.8 percent compared to June 2002, and up 87.1 percent compared to June 1995, a period of 10 years (Table 4).  Imports in June were up 99.7 percent compared to June 1995, while Exports were up 72.8 percent (Table 4).   

U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Canada

U.S. - Canada surface transportation trade totaled $39.1 billion in June, up 8.4 percent compared to June 2004 (Table 5).  Trucks carried 57 percent of imports and 79 percent of Exports by value (Table 6).  The value of imports carried by truck rose 3.3 percent in June 2005 compared to June 2004 while the value of Exports rose 13.0 percent.

Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada in June with $6.1 billion (Table 7).

U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Mexico

U.S. - Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $20.3 billion in June, up 5.1 percent compared to June 2004 (Table 8).  Trucks carried 83 percent of imports and 80 percent of Exports by value (Table 9).  The value of imports carried by truck rose 4.8 percent in June 2005 compared to June 2004 while the value of Exports rose 5.7 percent.

Texas led all states in surface trade with Mexico in June with $6.5 billion (Table 10).
