March 2009 Weather Summary for Dodge City
Most of March 2009 was dry for the Dodge City Regional Airport before a major blizzard hit the area on the 27th. Total snowfall from this blizzard was 12.6 inches and that increased the total snowfall for the season to 15.8 inches. This was still 4.8 inches below normal. Up until that time, only 3.2 inches of snow had fallen for the season. Much higher snowfall amounts occurred from the Pratt area to the Coldwater area where as much as 30 inches fell. The 24 hour snowfall record for Kansas is 24 inches and a new state record will likely be determined sometime in April from this event.
The total precipitation for the month at Dodge City was 0.68 inches, which was 1.16 inches below normal. The total precipitation from January 1st to March 31st was 0.88 inches and this was 2.24 inches below normal.
The average temperature was 45.4 degrees and that was 1.1 degree above normal. The average high temperature was 60.5 degrees and the average low was 30.2 degrees. The highest temperature was 86 degrees on the 4th, which was a record for that date, and the lowest was 8 degrees on the 1st and 11th. A record highest minimum temperature was set on the 22nd with a reading of 54 degrees.
The average wind speed was 15.2 mph. The highest wind gust was 58 mph from the west-northwest on the 24th. The last ten days of the month was especially windy with an average wind speed of 19.8 mph. The highest gust for each of those days was at least 44 mph except for the 29th. The highest for that day was 35 mph. The amount of sunshine for the month was 79 percent.
