$363,246 Safe Routes To School Non-Infrastructure Grants Awarded
The state Department of Transportation proudly announces $363,246 in the first round of awards for the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Non-Infrastructure Grants. SRTS is a rising international effort to increase highway and pedestrian safety and to promote walking and bicycling to school.

Cell Phone Waiting Areas Opened At Kona International, Hilo International, Lihue And Kahului Airports
New cell phone waiting areas have been opened at the Kona International, Hilo International, Lihue and Kahului Airports on the Big Island, Kauai and Maui, respectively, to allow motorists to temporarily park and wait, free of charge, for passengers on arriving flights. 2008 "Click It Or Ticket" Campaign A Success
This year, Hawai‘i’s four county police departments issued 4,387 seat belt violation citations during the summer’s “Click It Or Ticket” (CIOT) campaign. The 2008 seat belt education and enforcement campaign ran from May 12 through June 1. During last year’s campaign, police statewide issued 2,793 seat belt tickets.
New Bridge Along Kuhio Highway To Ease Traffic Congestion
The Department of Transportation (DOT) advertised for bids on July 1, 2008 for the Wailua Cane Haul Bridge Widening project along Kuhio Highway. The project will replace the existing one-lane bridge with a widened two-lane bridge. The $23.5 million project will add an additional lane and a bicycle/pedestrian path across the Wailua River and provide much needed relief for motorists traveling between Lihu‘e and Kapa‘a.
Freeway Service Patrol Begins Program Development
The state DOT has awarded a $3.9 million contract to develop, manage, and promote a pilot demonstration of the Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) program. The FSP will focus on providing motorist assistance as a means to reduce congestion on O‘ahu’s freeways. Service patrol trucks will patrol the H-1 Freeway and the H-201 Moanalua Freeway during weekday rush-hour traffic to assist stranded motorists, help clear minor incidents and assist with the safe management of traffic around major incident scenes. FSP service is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2009.
H-2 Freeway Mililani Interchange Overnight Roadwork Begins Sunday Night
Nighttime roadwork and lane closures will begin on Sunday night, September 21, at and near the H-2 Freeway Mililani Interchange as part of ongoing road rehabilitation. Please click here for the latest information on upcoming lane closures and detour routes.
Changes To ZipperLane Ridership Requirements To Increase Incentive To Carpool
The State Department of Transportation plans to change the minimum ridership requirement for the H-1 Freeway ZipperLane and the Nimitz Highway Contraflow Lane from two to three persons per vehicle. The change takes effect with the morning commute on July 8, 2008. The three-person ridership requirement is intended to encourage more commuters to carpool in an effort to relieve traffic congestion on O‘ahu.
Kahului Airport To Receive $2.5 Million Security Upgrade
The state Department of Transportation announced an upgrade to terminal operations at Kahului Airport, including a new, fully-integrated in-line Explosive Detection System (EDS) for enhanced baggage security screening.
Harbors Modernization Plan
DOT Harbors Division, in partnership with members of the Hawai`i Harbors User Group, has developed a system-wide harbor modernization plan which will implement harbor infrastructure improvements to address projected increases in ocean transportation of cargo and passengers through the year 2030.

Recognizing National Child Passenger Safety Week September 21-27, 2008
National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21- 27) is an annual campaign aimed to bring public awareness to the importance of properly securing all children in appropriate child safety seats, booster seats, or seat belts. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers of the new child passenger restraint law that went into effect last year.
