notes99pct2.jpg (8060 bytes) Phillip Gorden, M.D.

Dr. Phillip Gorden, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for the past 13 years, has returned to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural program as chief of the clinical and cellular biology section in NIDDK's Diabetes Branch.

After receiving his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completing his internship and residency at Yale University in 1964, Gorden began his biomedical research career at Yale as a Public Health Service clinical fellow and research fellow in metabolism. He joined NIDDK in 1966.

Dr. Gorden's research has focused on such areas as the clinical molecular biologic studies of diseases of the insulin receptor, and the diagnosis and treatment of hypoglycemic disorders. He has published more than 300 papers in scientific journals. Dr. Gorden is resuming his research on insulin receptor, insulin secretion, and severe insulin resistance.

Dr. Gorden was honored by other renowned scientists and colleagues at a symposium held at NIH in October 1999. The tribute recognized Dr. Gorden's 33 years of service to NIH and to the broader scientific community as researcher, director, mentor, and role model.
