EPA Acid Rain Program
The Acid Rain Program seeks to achieve significant environmental and public health benefits through reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by employing both traditional and innovative, market-based approaches for controlling air pollution.
Cap and Trade Program
“Cap and trade” is a market-based policy tool for protecting human health and the environment by setting an aggressive cap, or maximum limit, on emissions in the United States.

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe—Convention on Long-Range Transboundary of Air Pollution
The Convention on Long-Range Transboundary of Air Pollution (LRTAP) was signed in 1979 and was the first international agreement to recognize acid rain problems associated with the transboundary flow of air pollution, and the need for regional solutions. Cooperative action under the Convention has contributed significantly to reducing transboundary flows of pollutants. The Convention has a geographic scope, which spans from the Russian Federation in the east, to Canada and the United States in the west.

Provides a comprehensive, integrated assessment of acidic deposition in the United States including updated information on atmospheric emissions and deposition, aquatic effects, forest effects, visibility, human health, and cost/benefit analysis of the Acid Rain Control Program.
EPA Clean Air Markets Data and Maps
Provides access to a variety of data associated with emissions trading programs, including trends in emissions and heat input, environmental assessment maps, data sets and reports on acid deposition, facility attributes and contacts, and other file downloads.
EPA Clean Air Markets Resource Center
Offers an overview of acid rain, academic reports, Clean Air Market publications, and reference materials by program topics, including allowance trading, acid deposition and air quality, benefits and cost assessments, NOx programs, and emissions controls.
Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNET)
The nation's primary source for data on dry acidic deposition and rural, ground-level ozone. CASTNET is used in conjunction with other national monitoring networks to provide information for evaluating the effectiveness of national emission control strategies.
National Atmospheric Deposition Program
A network of over 100 federal, state, and local government agencies and private sector entities, that collect data on acid deposition, with monitors in over 200 sites in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID)
Provides information on the air quality attributes for almost all electric power generated in the United States.
USGS Data and Reports on Acid Rain
Provides a database of atmospheric deposition data and reports on trends and environmental effects of acid deposition.
USGS National Water Conditions
Provides maps of the pH levels of precipitation across the United States.
Legislation and Rules
Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR)
CAIR will achieve the largest reduction in air pollution in more than a decade by dramatically reducing air pollution that moves across state boundaries.
Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR)
CAMR provides the first ever federally mandated requirements to permanently cap and reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. This rule makes the U.S. the first country in the world to regulate mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Clean Air Visibility Rule (CAVR)
CAVR provides the first ever federally mandated requirements calling for coal-fired electric utilities to reduce their emissions of mercury.
Clear Skies Legislation
Clear Skies legislation would create a mandatory program that would dramatically reduce power plant emissions of SO2, NOx, and mercury by setting a national cap on each pollutant.
Clean Air Act
The Clean Air Act is a comprehensive Federal law that regulates air emissions from area, stationary, and mobile sources. Title IV of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments covers acid deposition control.
