May 6, 2009 Average 4th-Quarter Domestic Air Fares Drop from 3rd Quarter; Top 100 Airports: Highest Fare in Cincinnati, Lowest Fare at Dallas Love
Average domestic air fares in the fourth quarter of 2008 of $347 were 3.7 percent lower than the all-time quarterly high set in the third quarter but were still the highest for any fourth quarter on record, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today.

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 30.9 percent lower in February 2009 than in February 2008, dropping to $47.9 billion, the biggest year-to-year percentage decline on record, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. February was the fourth consecutive month with a yearly decline of greater than 13 percent.

U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 6.6 percent fewer workers in February 2009 than in February 2008, the eighth consecutive decrease in full-time equivalent employee (FTE) levels for the scheduled passenger carriers from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. The February FTE total of 391,682 for the scheduled passenger carriers was an increase of 1,025 from January but still was second lowest total since 1993. FTE calculations count two part-time employees as one full-time employee.

Surface transportation trade between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 27.2 percent lower in January 2009 than in January 2008, dropping to $47.5 billion, the biggest year-to-year percentage decline on record, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The $47.5 billion in U.S.-NAFTA trade in January 2009 was the lowest monthly amount since January 2004.

The 2008 Federal Radionavigation Plan (FRP) has been released by the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Defense, and Homeland Security. Published jointly by the three departments, the plan describes federal policy for operating and regulating common-use radionavigation systems with the goal of improving both national security and the safety and efficiency of the nation's transportation system.
February 20, 2009 U.S. DOT Seeks Innovative Research Proposals from Small Businesses to Address Transportation Challenges.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's (U.S. DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) today announced the first of two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program solicitations for 2009. Through this competitive program, the Department encourages the nation's small, high-tech, innovative businesses to be a significant part of the federal government's research and development efforts. Small businesses are invited to submit innovative research proposals that address high priority national transportation goals during the solicitation period, which runs from Feb. 13 through April 15. The SBIR program is administered by RITA's Volpe National Transportation Systems Center on behalf of the U.S. DOT's Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization.
