Earthquake, 04-06-2009
On April 6, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near the city of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Rome. According to Government of Italy (GOI) estimates, the earthquake killed more than 250 people, injured approximately 1,000 others, displaced nearly 28,000 individuals, and damaged an estimated 15,000 buildings across 26 cities and towns in the region. In response to the earthquake, the GOI declared an emergency and the GOI Civil Protection Department mobilized to lead the substantial national response, deploying more than 100 search and rescue teams and overseeing relief efforts by the Italian Red Cross to meet the humanitarian needs of affected populations.
On April 6, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Elizabeth L. Dibble declared a disaster due to the effects of the earthquake on surrounding populations. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $50,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Rome to the Italian Red Cross for the procurement and provision of emergency relief supplies.
