Data and Maps

Gulf of Mexico Aerial Imagery

The U.S. Geological Survey acquired true color digital video imagery during the summer and fall of 2008 along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The images were acquired at an oblique angle by a Cessna 185 amphibious airplane at an altitude of 500 to 2000 feet, and are provided via a Google Map interface. Each image is a still capture taken from video obtained using two Sony HVR-A1U HDV camcorders. One image still was extracted every 2 seconds from the video.

Geospatial Data

The NWRC Spatial Data and Metadata Server (SDMS) provides access to the USGS National Wetland Research Center’s (NWRC) geospatially referenced data, much of which is biological in nature. SDMS includes databases, metadata, maps, tools, and other related resources. The site represents NWRC's commitment to data accessibility and the requirements of Executive Order 12906. NWRC documents existing and newly developed data using specific content standards for metadata, and ensures that these metadata are electronically accessible.

LaCoast

The Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Task Force Web site (LaCoast) contains information and links relating to restoration projects in coastal Louisiana. The site is funded through the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) and is hosted by the USGS National Wetlands Research Center.

National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII)

NBII LogoThe National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) is a broad, collaborative program to provide increased access to data and information on the nation's biological resources. The NBII offers many types of information to many people, including:

NBII: Central Southwest/Gulf Coast Information Node (CSWGCIN)

NBII’s Central Southwest Gulf Coast Information Node (CSWGCIN) acquires, analyzes, and distributes biodiversity data and provides Web-based access to environmental resource information. Users include decision makers, researchers, educators, students, and anyone else interested in the region. The node helps users to access, browse, and integrate (map and visualize) multiple datasets about biological/environmental conditions and processes and focuses on important regional concerns such as invasive species, critical habitat, and coastal issues. CSWGCIN is an effort of the Houston Advanced Research Center and the USGS National Wetlands Research Center.

NBII: Data and Information Resources

This section of the NBII includes information on biological conferences; databases listing experts on biological, ecological, and natural resources management issues; fact sheets about and access to the NBII Metadata Clearinghouse as well as information about training courses in metadata creation; links to national and international specimen collections and museums of interest to the biological community; science magazines, academic and research journals, dictionaries, vocabularies, hypertexts, and other aids; links to various biological, scientific, and environmental organizations and associations; tools for collecting, managing, documenting, analyzing, and applying biological data; and a mechanism for disseminating best practices for the conservation community.
