Social Security is a dynamic agency of the Federal
government committed to keeping the promise of quality service to those who
depend upon the economic security that our programs and benefits provide.
Our employees uphold the highest standards of providing compassionate and
responsive service. Our employees work in a variety of areas in which they may make decisions regarding the approval or denial of claims for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income, help beneficiaries in the resolution of problems, or compute benefits. Many of our positions involve direct face-to-face contact with the public; others require contact primarily by telephone. Our employees receive in-depth training not only in Social Security and State laws, but also in the computer processing equipment used in our automated environment. Our employees are reflective of this unique history and cultural diversity of our region. In many of our positions, employees with bilingual skills are especially appreciated by our local communities. The Headquarters of the Social Security Administration is located in Baltimore, Maryland and provides management and computer support to an organization of over 65,000 employees. In addition to the headquarters site, there are 10 regional offices, 6 processing centers, 3 data operations centers, and about 1,300 local Social Security offices located throughout the country. The New York Region, with approximately 5,000 employees, has 132 field offices and 14 Offices of Disability and Adjudication Review located throughout New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, our five teleservice centers are located in Jamaica, New York; East Brunswick, Jersey City and Saddle Brook, New Jersey; and San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Northeastern Program Service Center is located in Jamaica, New York. Our Brooklyn and Queens Social Security Card Centers provide Social Security Number services to people who live or receive mail in Kings and Queens counties. Nearly seven million New York Region beneficiaries receive more than $50 billion in Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits annually. The Social Security Administration provides equal opportunity for all persons without regard to race, color, age, national origin, religion, gender, disability or sexual orientation.
