Fair Housing Education Day Across America

April 20 - 24, 2009 is Fair Housing Education Week in America. To celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and its partners will be going to elementary and middle schools across America to teach students about fair housing.

2009 CMS Money Follows the Person Conference

This conference was held March 2-4, 2009 in Baltimore, MD. Its theme was "Medicaid - New Opportunities for Community Living Community Inclusion and Integration." It featured presentations on topics such as community inclusion for persons living with a disability, innovative ways to increase housing capacity, Medicaid rebalancing, self direction and quality management systems.

Recommendations for Accessible Emergency Transportable Housing

This report includes the recommendations of the Emergency Transportable Housing Federal Advisory Committee (committee) to the U.S. Access Board. These recommendations are intended to assist the Board to develop new rules or revise its existing requirements for the design and construction of emergency transportable housing subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA).

An interactive community of providers, consumers, policymakers, researchers and public agencies at federal, state and local levels who share knowledge and promising practices in order to improve the lives of people affected by homelessness who have mental health conditions, substance use issues and histories of trauma.

Disaster Assistance for People Affected by Flooding

Homeowners, renters, businesses and non-profit organizations affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding can apply for disaster relief assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To apply by phone call 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362)/1-800-462-7585 TTY for people who are speech- or hearing-impaired. The toll-free number is open 24 hours a day.

HUD Charges Homeowner Association with Discrimination Against Disabled Homeowner

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has charged a homeowner association in Puerto Rico with housing discrimination for refusing to permit a disabled man to have support railings in the front of his home. The Fair Housing Act makes it unlawful to deny persons with disabilities reasonable accommodations or the right to make reasonable modifications to a dwelling when the accommodations or modifications are necessary for them to fully enjoy their homes.

24th National Home & Community Based Services Conference

This conference, convened by the National Association of State Units on Aging and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, took place September 28 - October 1, 2008 in Boston, MA. It offered professional and network opportunities for professionals who administer and operate home and community based services programs throughout the country.

Emerging Trends & People with Disabilities: Public Consultation

The National Council on Disability (NCD) gathered public input for a study of emerging issues and trends affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Information gathered will be used in the development of NCD's next annual progress report to the President and Congress.

New VA Rules for Specially Adapted Housing Grants

Before the change in the law eligible veterans and servicemembers could receive special adaptive housing grants of $10,000 or $50,000 from VA only once. Now they may use the benefit up to three times. VA has mailed more than 16,000 letters to eligible veterans, reaching out to those who used only a portion of their grant or who decided not to use the grant even after initially qualifying.

Report issued on January 15, 2008 by the National Council on Disability (NCD) that examines employment, housing, education, transportation and other federal policies that affect people with disabilities.

$1.5 Billion to Support Homeless Programs Nationwide

This funding will offer transitional and permanent supportive housing to more than 168,000 homeless individuals, and support programs that help to pay rent and provide permanent housing for disabled homeless individuals and their families.
