The Listing of Impairments (the listings) is a set of rules we use to quickly decide that people are disabled based on the severity of their medical conditions.
We periodically review the listings to ensure that they are up to date. When we conduct these reviews, we consider advances in medical knowledge, treatment, disability evaluation, and our program experience. We may also hold policy conferences to receive expert opinions about how we currently evaluate the impairments described in the listings and whether and how we might update our listings.
