National Council on Disability (NCD) Releases Annual Report

On March 31, 2009 NCD released its annual report to the President and Congress calling for a new integrated approach to disability policy within the federal government. The report looks at many issues including access to health care, housing and technology, and negative public attitudes and stereotypes about people with disabilities. DOJ Sues Large Multi-Family Housing Developer Alleging Disability-Based Housing Discrimination

The Justice Department (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against JPI Construction L.P. (JPI) and six JPI-affiliated companies in U.S. District Court in Dallas for failing to provide accessible features required by the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act at multi-family housing developments in Texas and other states.

Hurricane Recovery Funding Announced

The departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have announced hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to stimulate long-term recovery in the wake of last year's devastating hurricane season and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. HUD and the state of Louisiana will launch a new five-year, $50 million program to offer permanent supportive housing to approximately 1,000 homeless individuals and families living with disabilities, such as a serious mental illness or substance abuse. HUD will also provide $23 million in rental assistance vouchers to the Louisiana Recovery Authority to support an estimated 2,000 elderly and disabled disaster victims.
