Energy CO2 Emissions by State

This section provides state carbon dioxide (CO2) emission inventories from fossil fuel combustion, by end-use sector (commercial, industrial, residential, transportation, and electric power), in million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MMTCO2) from 1990 though 2005.

Nationally, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion represented the largest source (80%) of total GWP weighted emissions from all emission sources in 2006 (EPA 2008).  Similarly, (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions within a state.  While emissions from other sources (i.e. Industrial Processes, Solvents, Agriculture, Waste, and Land-Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry) are important and often significant within a state, they are not included in these estimates due to a lack of data availability, higher level of uncertainty in quantification methods, and smaller contribution to total emissions.  For more information about these emissions, please consult the State Greenhouse Gas Inventory page.

EPA developed these state-level CO2 estimates using (1) fuel consumption data from the DOE/EIA State Energy Data 2005 Consumption tables and (2) emission factors from the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks 1990-2006. The U.S. Inventory data may differ slightly from the state-level CO2 estimates because of methodological differences, including scope of coverage, underlying data, and assumptions.
