Achieve Excellence in Science and Technology Education and in Workforce Development

The White House Report "Science for the 21st Century" discusses the current Administration's top priorities for maintaining and improving the nation's scientific enterprise. Achieving excellence in science and technology education and in workforce development is identified as one of the major responsibilities of Federal scientific efforts. Education and outreach are crucial for sustaining a strong science and technology workforce, as well as building an understanding of the issues in citizens from all walks of life. As the report notes, a community awareness of the relevance of science to the issues of the day is needed to sustain the interest of the next generation in preparing for careers in science and technology, or for simply participating as good citizens in decisions that affect their lives.
