Energy Projects and Candidate LandfillsLMOP Landfill Database As of December 2008, approximately 480 landfill gas (LFG) energy projects were operational in the United States. These 480 projects generate approximately 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and deliver 255 million cubic feet per day of LFG to direct-use applications. EPA estimates that approximately 520 additional landfills present attractive opportunities for project development.
LMOP Landfill DatabaseThe Excel spreadsheets below contain the latest version of the LMOP database of operational and under construction LFG energy projects; candidate municipal solid waste landfills having LFG energy potential; and information on additional landfills that could represent LFG energy opportunities. This Excel version of the database is updated and posted to the Web site each month. The information contained in the LMOP database is compiled from a variety of sources, including annual voluntary submissions by LMOP Partners and industry publications. Due to the limitations of voluntary reporting, LMOP cannot guarantee the accuracy of these data. LMOP defines a candidate landfill as one that is accepting waste or has been closed for five years or less and has at least one million tons of waste and does not have an operational or under construction project; or is designated based on actual interest or planning. Other landfills, with project status of "Potential", do not meet the candidate definition, whether because of complete or incomplete data; however, these landfills could have LFG energy project potential based on site-specific needs or if data were complete.
