The EPA undertakes regular testing, sampling and surveillance to determine the levels of pollutants in various media as well as human, plant and animal exposure. The goal of these efforts is to assess current ecological conditions and forecast future risks to the sustainability of our natural resources. Through its research labs and regional offices, the Agency collects and assesses air, water, soil and exposure information to produce a comprehensive picture of the overall state of human health and the environment. To support these activities, the EPA develops new technologies that advance the science of ecological monitoring.
