An essential part of the EPA's role in protecting human health and the environment is remediation, the cleaning up of sites polluted by hazardous substances. Through its research labs and other activities EPA participates in the development and application of innovative technologies for the characterization and treatment of contaminated waste sites, soils, and groundwater. In the pursuit of these goals, the Agency has relied on cooperative ventures with a variety of partners, including other federal agencies, state and local authorities, community groups and the private sector.
