EPA, in cooperation with state and local authorities, issues a variety of permits to business and industry. These permits allow EPA to monitor, regulate and offer standardized guidance for the handling and release of hazardous waste, toxic chemicals and other pollutants. Permits are issued for air pollution sources, pesticide use and development, waste management, water pollution and other activities. These permits often require facilities to develop emergency plans, find insurance and financial backing, and train employees to handle hazards. Permits may also include facility-specific requirements such as ground-water and air quality monitoring. In this way, permits help build partnerships with state and tribal governments, other federal agencies, industry and the public.
