Industrial processes and practices are a potential source of air and water pollution. EPA works with industry to reduce the amount of pollutants entering the environment by issuing permits that specify the levels of emissions allowed from each industrial process. A number of EPA programs provide guidance to small businesses on how to comply with federal regulations designed to reduce the amount of pollution they generate. EPA has a number of programs that help industry voluntarily reduce pollutants entering the air, land, and water in a cost-effective manner, and in some cases allow industry to design and test entirely new approaches for reducing pollution that go beyond existing environmental regulations.
