Chlorofluorocarbons, halons and certain other substances used in consumer products and industrial processes have been found to be destructive to the earth's ozone layer. In order to reduce this damage the ozone layer, the EPA has established a list of acceptable alternatives, or substitutes, to these substances. Substitutes are reviewed on the basis of ozone depletion potential, global warming potential, toxicity, flammability, and exposure potential. Some substitutes are subject to restricted use while others may only be used under specific conditions.
