Under the auspices of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the EPA's Office of Solid Waste administers the Corrective Action Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program. The Corrective Action Program encompasses active, or soon to be active facilities, where hazardous waste pollutants have been released into soil, ground water, surface water, and air. As a condition for obtaining RCRA operating permits, these active facilities are required to clean up contaminants that are released or have been released in the past. RCRA promotes the proper reuse, recycling and reclamation of such items, as well as the safe management of containers and storage tanks. At present there are approximately 3700 facilities in the corrective action workload.
