The EPA estimates that there are about 716,000 federally regulated underground storage tanks buried at over 269,000 sites nationwide. Leaking storage tanks can cause soil pollution, contaminate groundwater and pose a risk of fire or explosion. The EPA works with state and local authorities to enforce regulations that require owners and operators of commercial and industrial storage tanks to prevent, detect, and clean up releases of petroleum and other hazardous substances.
