The EPA participates in international programs to ensure the observance of high radiation protection standards. Two major international radiation protection organizations, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Commission of European Communities, have developed draft standards containing clearance levels for individual radionuclides. The United States is working with both organizations to update and broaden the draft standards. The EPA works with the Atomic Energy Agency to ensure that radioactively contaminated materials are not imported into the United States. The Agency is collaborating with representatives of other industrialized countries to develop international radiological screening guidelines.
